Heading D1G.- [Also in Division B3] In a hollow tufting needle from which yarn is discharged approximately axially of the needle shank, the .discharge end of the shank is tapered to displace a work-penetrating tip towards the axis of the shank so that the taper provides a camming surface to displace yarns of the backing material when penetrated by the needle. The discharge end of the shank 22 of a hollow tufting needle is initially bevelled at 30 degrees to form a point 35. Said end is then introduced into a bore 41 of .a swaging block 40, the bore having a diameter of 0.001 inch greater than that of the shank. Said end is then forced into a conical bore 42, co-axial with bore 41 and subtending an angle of 12 degrees. until the end 36 of mouth 34 opposite point 35 reaches the inner end of bore 41, whereby point 35 is displaced towards the axis of shank 22. The edges of mouth 34 are then rounded off and the area in the vicinity of mouth 34 is hardened. |
