A material is rendered within a heated vessel or container which encloses a rotary agitator including a shaft driven by a hydraulic motor. Hydraulic fluid is supplied to the motor at a substantially constant pressure so that the motor transmits a substantially constant horsepower to the agitator shaft to effect an automatic increase in the rotational speed of the agitator when the required torque decreases and a decrease in speed when the torque increases.
