Monoglycol ethers or glycol semiesters of aromatic cpds. contg. hydroxyl-gps. or of carboxylic acids are obtd. by reacting 1,2- epoxides with aromatic cpds. contg. hydroxyl-gps. or carboxylic acids, at elevated temps. in presence of a phosphoric acid triamide, as catalyst, e.g. phenol may be reacted with ethylene oxide in presence of hexamethylphosphoric acid triamide to give phenylmonoglycol ether.
