PURPOSE: To provide a plastic beverage closure with a seal effectively protecting the pressured contents in the container. CONSTITUTION: A plastic beverage closure 20 consists of a base wall 21, a peripheral skirt 22 and screw threads on the inner surface of the skirt engaging with the threads of a container made of glass or plastic. The closure includes a compression-molded seal extending around periphery of the inner surface of the base wall and its juncture to the peripheral skirt. The closure also includes a central axially thickened portion 23 and a channel 24 surrounding the thickened portion and radially extending to an annular radially thickened portion 25 on the skirt at the juncture with the base wall. A compression-molded liner 30 is provided on the thickened a portion 23, a channel 24 and a concave surface 29 of the closure 20 and forms a flat sealing surface for contact with the end surface of the container mouth F and an arcuate surface engaging the arcuate surface of the container.
