METHOD OF CONTROLLED COOLING FOR STEEL STREEP

Controlled cooling of steel strip is carried out in a spray cooling appts. provided with a flow rate control valve, by (a) calculating the heat transfer rate necessary for obtaining the desired cooling rate; (b) calculating and setting the coolant flow rate from an equation relating the heat transfer rate to coolant flow rate; (c) calculating the length of the coolant spraying region; (d) turning on the number of nozzles corresponding to the calculated spraying region length; (e) correcting the coolant flow rate by re-calculating the heat transfer rate when the strip thickness varies; and (f) correcting the on-off pattern of the nozzle by re-calculating the spraying region length when the strip speed varies.
