A process is disclosed for melting metallic materials in an arc furnace driven by direct current and having a pot-like vessel composed of a metallic envelope and of a fireproof lining, a negative electrode that extends into the vessel and is coaxial to the vertical axis of the vessel, and a positive electrode arranged in the bottom area of the vessel. In order to obtain a direct current arc furnace that has a simple design and reduced wear of the fireproof lining of the furnace and positive electrodes without affecting the melting performance, the fireproof lining (12) is heated up before loading and an arc (23) is formed between the material to be melted (40) and the negative electrode (21) in order to melt the metallic material. The direct current feedback (22) occurs through the fireproof material of the lining located in the area of the positive electrode (22), through the positive electrode (22) and through the metallic envelope (11) of the vessel. |
