PURPOSE:To improve the durability and the economization of the title element by providing the element with a heating layer capable of forming an optical waveguide by impressing heat energy or further optical energy to a polymeric liquid crystal mounted on a substrate. CONSTITUTION:The element 1 is obtained by forming the polymer waveguide layer 8 having a refractive index 1.55 by an electron beam resist on a substrate 5 which has the refractive index of 1.5 and is composed of a copolymer of styrene and methylmethacrylate and is vapor deposited with electrode 6 composed of Al, and an optical waveguide (a high mol.wt. liquid crystal layer) 4 composed of a polymeric liquid crystal is also formed on the layer 8 by a wire-bar coating method. And an orientation film 7 subjected to the vapour deposition with the electrode 3 composed of Al is press-contacted on the layer 4, and the heating layer 2 composed of tantalum nitride (TaN) is subjected to the vapour deposition on the electrode 3 through an insulating layer. The two layers structure of the element is formed by laminating the waveguide 8 and the layer 4. The element is heated by allowing the current to flow to the layer 2, and made in a state of non-impressing voltage by opening between the electrodes 3 and 6, and orientated in parallel to the surface of the element by the layer 7. Thus, the durability and economicity of the element are improved. |
