A layer of material is removed from a surface (14) of a bonded abrasive product (10) by directing a laser beam (18) at the surface (14), causing the laser beam (18) to traverse the surface to damage the surface (14) to a desired depth and removing the damaged material remaining on the surface (14), for example by lapping. The bonded abrasive product (10) is particularly a diamond compact.
