Processes for mfg. engine blocks and foam patterns for use in the processes are claimed. A first foam pattern has a crankcase portion (138) with first and second assembly faces (142, 146); a righthand cylinder portion (150,174), fixed to the first assembly face and having a primary locating device (159); a lefthand cylinder portion (162,206), fixed to the second assembly face and having a primary locating device (171,172); a transmission channel (62) with an upper end located in the righthand cylinder portion; and a transmission channel (66) with an upper end located in the lefthand cylinder portion. A second foam pattern, used in the casting of a two-stoke engine block, (partially) delimits a cylinder bore and has a primary locating device and a transmission channel with an upper end located in the pattern. A third foam pattern has a planar front face with a bearing recess partially delimited by a semi-cylindrical face in which is provided a recess partially delimited by planar spaced locating faces which run perpendicularly to the front face.
