PURPOSE:To advance document retrieving work by surely displaying a part or all of titles of documents in any case at the time of executing retrieving processing. CONSTITUTION:A control device 1 sets up the number of titles to be displayed inputted from an input device 2 by a user. When a keyword is inputted from the device 2, the device 1 retrieves a document concerned from an external storage device 4 based upon the keyword and obtains the number of answers and the title of the retrieved document. Even when the number of answers is larger than the previously determined number of titles to be displayed, the device 1 displays the retrieved titles on a display device 3 up to the number of titles to be displayed. The device 1 reads out a document corresponding to a title specified by the user from the device 4 and displays its contents on the device 3.
