The invention relates to a process for the preparation of terpene, a substance of which 4 isomers represented by the following formulae: <IMAGE> 1,8-terpene:cis(a), trans(b) 1,4-terpene:cis(c), trans(d) are known. The process is based on the reaction of α-pinene at low temperature (0 to 40 degree C) in the presence of mineral acids, which is well known, but which can be performed with higher yields in very much shorter times in the presence of suitable non-ionic surfactants.
