An axle drive unit for an electric motor car consists of an electric motor (1), a change speed gearbox in which a driveshaft (14) is provided with loose wheels (4, 5) which intermesh with fixed wheels (6, 7) and can optionally be coupled to their shaft (14), and of a differential gear whose differential basket (8) is coaxial with the axle driveshafts (9, 10). In order to provide a drive unit which is as small, lightweight and cheap as possible, the differential basket (8) itself is the driveshaft of the gear box and the loose wheels (4, 5) can be connected to the driveshaft (14) by means of a sliding sleeve (11). <IMAGE>
