Retractor instrument for enlarging body cavities

The retractor instrument (10) has a retractor section (22) which is introduced through an opening in the patient's skin to the body cavity to enable it to retract the covering wall of the cavity.The instrument has a depressor (26) for retracting internal organs which has a silicon plate (28) at its distal end. The retractor section may comprise two separate retractor arms (50,51) which operate within the body cavity and which are joined together outside the cavity. An element (18) may be provided which indicates the extraction force exerted on the cavity wall during retraction. The retractor section may be joined to a frame (14) which is mounted on the accessory rails of an operation table.
