The flow meter includes a vertical tube (1) through which a fluid or gas flows in upward direction. A float (2) is arranged in the tube with some play in the transverse direction. The float is movable in the flow direction. The inside of the tube or the float is conical. transmission system includes a permanent magnet (3) fixedly connected to the float and a transformer (19). The system generates an electric position signal corresponding to the position of the float. The position signal is displayed and recorded. The transformer and an additional transformer are arranged and formed to generate electrical alternating signals using small movements of the float about an average value. The signals are fed to a microprocessor (13). The processor generates a fault or alarm signal for blockage detection of the transmission system when the amplitude of the alternating signal exceeds a minimum value during a predetermined time period.
