The apparatus for laser operations (welding and cutting) on a workpiece comprises a laser unit, a laser workhead and a detector unit with a least one sensor. For supervision and control, a beam emanating from the workpiece is fed into this sensor. An observation channel (35) passes through the laser workhead (1) so that during operation a beam (40a, 40b, 40c) from the workpiece (6) passes through it. The detector unit (15) adjoins the workhead in such a way that it receives the beam (40a, 40b, 40c) from the observation channel and feeds it into the sensor (31, 32). Also claimed is the detector unit.
