A process for preparing a carboxylic acid of formula R<1>CO2H, wherein R<1> is optionally substituted aryl, optionally substituted heteroaryl or alkenyl optionally substituted by aryl; the process comprising reacting an alcohol of formula R<1>CH2OH or an aldehyde of formula R<1>CHO with oxygen in the presence of a base, a catalytic amount of a copper salt and a suitable ligand; optionally in the presence of an additive.
