摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the firing time in the production of a low expansive cordierite body. SOLUTION: Talc, an alumina forming component and silica as raw materials are combined. The average particle diameter of the talc is <4 &mu;m and the average particle diameter of alumina forming component is <2 &mu;m. A plastic mixture is formed from the raw materials by mixing the raw materials with an effective quantity of a vehicle and a molding assistant to impart plastic molding adaptability and green strength. A green article is formed from the raw materials and dried. An article having <15&times;10<-7> deg.C<-1> average coefficient of thermal expansion at least in one direction and consisting essentially of cordierite is produced by heating the green article from room temp. up to the max. temp. of about 1,360-1,435 deg.C at least at about 315 deg.C/hr average heating rate and keeping at the max. temp. for 0.05-4.4 hr. In such a case, total heating time from room temp. to the finish of the keeping time at the max. temp. is <4.5 hr.
