PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a laser device to oscillate efficiently, only in a basic lateral mode so as to output a laser beam of high power and high beam quality, wherein the laser device is changed from a lateral mode to a basic mode in a certain direction through an optical waveguide layer. SOLUTION: A cylindrical lens 2 and a resonator mirror optical system 6 composed of a half-wave plate 3, a Fourier transform lens 4, and a rectangular prism mirror 5 are provided to the side of the projection edge face 1A of a semiconductor laser 1. A laser beam B0, which is projected from the broad area semiconductor laser 1 and regulated in amplitude distribution so as to be in a basic lateral mode in a direction vertical to an active layer 7, is made to impinge on the semiconductor laser 1 turning its amplitude distribution by an angle of 180 deg., making a ridge line 5B serve as a center by the rectangular prism mirror 5. At this point, an amplitude distribution is converted into a basic lateral mode in a direction in parallel with the active layer 7, so that a laser device of this constitution is capable of efficiently oscillating a laser beam only in the fundamental lateral mode.
