PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plate type heat exchanger for a heat pump which can be used both as a condenser and as an evaporator. SOLUTION: This is a plate type heat exchanger for a vertical arrangement type of heat pump equipped with a hollow plate 11A for a refrigerant and a plate 11B for a heat exchange medium, and this is provided with the first connection pipe 1 which pierces the bottoms of the plates 11A and 11B and connects the fellow bottoms of the plates 11A and 11B through the first opening 4 for letting refrigerant liquid in liquid condition flow in from above without adding squeeze action, the second connection pipe 3 whose one end is connected to an outside passage 2 and whose other end is positioned within the first connection pipe 1 and which lets the refrigerant in gas-liquid mixed condition having flown in from the outside passage 2 flow out, without adding squeeze action, into the first connection passage 1 through the second opening 5 of smaller aperture area than that of the first opening 4, and a bypass passage 7 which is connected to the first connection pipe 1 and the outside passage 2 without through this second connection pipe 3 and allows only the flow going to this outside passage 2.
