PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wire rod excellent in wire drawability and cold rollability and to inexpensively produce a steel wire using it as the stock under high productivity at high yield. SOLUTION: This steel wire rod contains 0.93 to 1.20% C, 0.1 to 1.0% Si, 0.1 to 1.0% Mn, <=1.0% Cr, <=0.5% Cu, <=1.0% Ni, <=2.0% Co, <=0.5% Mo, <=0.5% W, <=0.2% V, <=0.1% Nb, <=0.03% rare earth metals, <=0.003% Ca, <=0.003% Mg and <=0.005% B, and the balance Fe with impurities, and in the impurities, the conetnt of Al is controlled to <=0.0020%, insol.Al to <=0.0012%, Ti to <=0.0020%, N to <=0.0050%, P to <=0.012%, S to <=0.01% and O to <=0.0020%, and Ti(%)×N(%)<=6×10-6 and N(%)-1.3B(%)-0.3Ti(%)<=0.0035% are satisfied. More preferably, the contents of Sn, As and Sb in the impurities are controlled to <=0.005%, <=0.003% and <=0.003%, respectively.
