The lighting control unit is located within the lead vehicle (1) and comprises of an electronic control unit, ECU, (10), lighting control unit (12) and a light activation unit (23) within the ECU. These combine to activate the blinkers (11). The ECU receives vehicle state information from a yaw sensor (14), an angle detector (13) and wheel speed sensors (16). The position of the vehicle can be determined by the onboard GPS system. Activation of the lighting units onboard the vehicle can be transmitted to following vehicles via transmission unit (20).
