PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer printer capable of maintaining a good recording quality even in the case the environmental temperature is low. SOLUTION: A thermal transfer printer 1 comprises a platen 2, a carriage 4 reciprocally movable along the platen 2, capable of mounting a ribbon cassette storing an ink ribbon, and a thermal head 5 in the carriage, provided with a plurality of heat generating elements capable of being contacted with or separated from the platen 2, arranged in the direction orthogonal to the recording direction, for recording a desired image on a paper by selectively driving the plurality of the heat generating elements in the thermal head 5 based on the recording information so as to transfer the ink of the ink ribbon onto the paper, wherein a ribbon heating means 12 for heating the unused part of the ink ribbon at least to be provided for recording is provided.
