PURPOSE: To provide a transmitter and receiver used for a reliable optical data communication system while the band width for data transmission is optimized. CONSTITUTION: An optical communication system has an optical data transmitter 10 which transmits a data code as a pair of optical pulses. The pair of optical pulses has (1) a first prescribed time separation D0 indicating a first input signal and (2) a second prescribed time separation D1 indicating a second input signal. The time required for transmitting the data code is longer than any one of the first and second prescribed time separations D0 and D1. In addition, this system generates a first output signal in response to a pair of pulses having the first prescribed time separation D0 and a second output signal in response to a pair of pulses having the second prescribed time separation D1. A receiver 130 generates a clock signal by synthesizing the first and second output signals with each other. An optical AND circuit used for the transmitter 10 and receiver 130 can be realized by using a Sagnac switch. |
