PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain complet natural commutation between respective phases in a matrix converter 10 alternately connecting phases G1 to G6, of which quantity is (m) in a power source 11 of delivering AC voltage with phases 1 to L3, of which the quantity is (n) in a load 12 via a plurality of controllable two-way switches 14 disposed as a matrix of (m)×(n). SOLUTION: Switching from a first phase Gk in the power source 11 to the second phase Gl of the power source 11 is executed, only when the following condition is satisfied: Ik.(Vk-Vl).Kijkl<0, where, Ik and Vk are current and voltage of the first phase Gk, Vl is voltage of the second phase G1, and Kijkl is a constant unique to mutual inductance between the respective phases G1 to G6 in the power source 11 and the inductance of the load 12.
