PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antioxidant and a DNA damage inhibitor having excellent free radical scavenging property, containing a vegetable extract as an active component and having high safety and provide a skin care preparation compounded with the agent.

SOLUTION: The invention provides an antioxidant and a DNA damage inhibitor containing the extract of the flower of a plant of the genus Gentiana or the extract of Gentiana davidii or Gentiana urnula belonging to the genus Gentiana and a skin care preparation such as cosmetic containing the agent. The skin care preparation such as cosmetic compounded with the extract exhibits effectiveness to prevent the oxidation of skin lipid component, suppress the oxidative damage of the skin, the DNA damage and the aging of the skin and protects the skin.
