<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel cell system capable of preventing freezing of a dilution valve even when a fuel cell is stopped for a prescribed time under a low temperature environment, and to provide the control method of the fuel cell system. <P>SOLUTION: The fuel cell system S is equipped with the fuel cell FC, a hydrogen tank HT supplying hydrogen to the fuel cell FC, a compressor C supplying air to the fuel cell FC, a dilution device 3 diluting unreacted hydrogen exhausted from the fuel cell FC with unreacted air exhausted from the fuel cell FC, a bypass passage 14 directly guiding part of air supplied to the fuel cell FC to the dilution device 3, the dilution valve 14a changing over the communication state of the bypass passage 14, and a humidifier 12 humidifying air flowing from the compressor C to the fuel cell FC.
