PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required for analog/digital conversion, and to attain power saving. SOLUTION: In a digital camera, an object is imaged and an analog video signal representing an object image is obtained. The obtained analog video signal is inputted to an analog/digital conversion circuit 17 for quantization bit number determination and data corresponding to a peak level of the analog video signal are outputted. The number of quantization bits of an analog/digital conversion circuit 18 for display/recording is determined from the outputted data. The determined number of quantization bits is set to the analog/digital conversion circuit 18 for display/recording. The analog video signal is converted into digital image data in accordance with the set number of quantization bits.
