PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cross dichroic prism having high optical performance and a projector the picture quality of which is improved. SOLUTION: The cross dichroic prism 10 is provided with: right-angled isosceles triangular prisms 12, 13, 14; and a right-angled isosceles triangular prism 11 having a chamfered plane 11a formed in a right-angled apex angle part. A light absorbing film 15 is formed on the chamfered plane 11a of the right-angled isosceles triangular prism 11. Each of four right-angled isosceles triangular prisms 11, 12, 13, 14 has a dichroic mirror film 11B, 12R, 13B or 14R on one of two side faces by which a right angle is formed. The right-angled ridge lines of the adjacent ones of the right-angled isosceles triangular prisms 11, 12, 13, 14 are made to face each other to form an X shape in which the right-angled ridge lines are made to cross each other at right angles.
