The system (2) includes a modulator (40) which receives a comparator output signal (38) and generates an appropriate modulation signal (42). A gate drive controller (44) receives the modulation signal and generates a respective gate drive signal (46). An inverter (48) receives the gate drive signal, and generates motor drive output signals for each phase of the WFSDM suitable for driving the WFSDM with the desired rotational speed and torque. A comparator (36) compares the inverse Clarke transformation signal (32) to actual values of the current that the WFSDM receives for each of its respective phases to generate the comparator output signal representative of any difference.
