PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a vertical furnace, which can effectively utilize a conventional sieve facility as it is, can improve the performance of removing powders adhering to the coke for metallurgy at a comparatively low cost, hardly causes troubles such as a clogging of a sieve mesh in the sieve facility, and can stabilize an operation of the vertical furnace. SOLUTION: The method for operating the vertical furnace includes adding a powdery water-absorbing agent 2 to the coke 1 for metallurgy in a wet condition, mixing them, sieving them and charging coke 7 for metallurgy remaining on the sieve into the vertical furnace. It is preferable to use a polymeric water-absorbing material as the water-absorbing agent, to use the water-absorbing agent having a particle size equal to or smaller than a half size of the sieve mesh, to add the water-absorbing agent by scattering it onto the coke for metallurgy on a belt conveyor 4, and to mix the coke for high metallurgy with the water-absorbing agent by using an impact given in a connection fall 4a of the belt conveyor.
