PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure travel safety of a passenger conveyor by detecting abnormal displacement of a moving handrail regardless of the location of a passenger on the passenger conveyor without modifying the passenger conveyor significantly.SOLUTION: A safety device of a passenger conveyor 10 comprises: a moving handrail 1 moving while being guided by a guide rail 4 installed on a top face 5a of a handrail 5; a switch 3 for detecting the movement of the moving handrail 1 in a direction orthogonal to a travel direction; and a control apparatus for stopping the operation of the device including the traveling of the moving handrail 1 based on the detection result of the switch 3. The switch 3 is provided in a side face 4c on the inside of the guide rail 4. A spring 2 for operating the switch 3 and a spring holding part 4b are provided in a portion facing the side face 4c on the inside of the immovable guide rail 4 of the moving handrail 1.
