A scanning system, comprising: a range scanner mounted to a structure and set at a height above a ground surface, the range scanner disposed at an angle between 0 degrees and 90 degrees with respect to a vertical axis, and configured to output a laser scanning beam in a plurality of directions; and a mirror block mounted to the structure and having a plurality of reflective surfaces externally disposed around the laser range scanner to receive the laser scanning beam and to reflect the laser scanning beam toward the ground surface in a plurality of directions to create multiple downwardly projecting scanning planes, wherein, in response to an object in the multiple downwardly projecting scanning planes, the laser range scanner is further configured to receive a signal from the multiple scanning planes and communicate the received signal to a controller as a detection signal.
