The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for coding video, which select the number of candidates for a skipping or merging mode based on coding-related information of neighboring blocks having been already coded. The method for coding video according to the present invention comprises the steps of: determining the number of candidates for a skipping or merging mode based on coding-related information of neighboring blocks having been already coded; calculating a rate-distortion cost of the skipping mode for selected candidates when the determined number of candidates is smaller than the preset number of candidates; calculating a rate-distortion cost of the merging mode for at least some of the selected candidates; and outputting video coded in accordance with a coding mode selected based on the calculated rate-distortion costs.
