In a machine for making vertical welds between plates forming the wall of a storage tank or the like, a gas shielded arc welding head is mounted in a draught-free housing straddling the plates. A closed housing 20 having manholes 28, 30 for entry and a lug 24 for lifting is provided with end faces 23, 27 having slots 26 to receive the plates 18. The end-faces 23, 27 have sliding doors 36, 38 with resilient edgings 44 which engage the plates 18 during welding. The flows 21, 22 of the housing are movable vertically relative to the main body of the housing by an operator within the housing. Flexible sheeting 46 is connected between the floors 21, 22 and the main body of the housing to exclude draughts. The housing 20 is supported on the upper edges of the plates 18 by a motor-driven roller 110 and an idler roller 164 adjustable vertically relative to the housing to align the welding head with the joint. A carbon dioxide shielded arc welding device 55 using a flux cored electrode 52 and provided with an operator's seat 60 is transversable along a track 58 which is clamped to a member 74 fixed to the housing 20. A locating device 114 clamped to the upper end of the track 58 has a stop 134 on a pivoted arm engageable in the joint and carries a clamp by means of which the machine is secured to the plates 18. The welding device 55 has water-cooled copper melt retaining plates 56 to which the carbon dioxide is supplied and which direct it on to the welding area. Air conditioning and fume extraction may be provided for the housing 20. |
