Refractory materials comprise at least 85% of magnesia in which at least 80% of all periclases present have a crystal size of at least 200 microns. Refractory bricks are prepared by moulding the material at 500 kg./cm.2, drying and baking at 1650 DEG C. for at least 10 hours. Titanium dioxide and ferric oxide up to 3% may be added as sinter promoting agents.
