Sand removal plant comprises a basin 1 connected to a channel 6 for supplying impure water and to a channel 7 for evacuating clear water, the basin having a circular horizontal section and conical surfaces 3 converging at their lower end on a sand collecting tank 4, a stirrer 25 being arranged in the central part of the basin, below the lowest water level, to impart a constant movement to the water in a transverse direction relative to the sedimentation movement of the sand, and a pump 10 permitting the transfer of the sand from the collecting tank towards a drainage compartment 9, characterized in that the pump 10 is arranged in the central part of the basin, the sand evacuation pipe 11 constituting a vertical axis in the centre of the basin, the stirrer being carried on a hollow shaft arranged around this vertical axis.
