Aromatic amines of the general formula in which R 1 and R 2 represent hydrogen, alkyl, cyoloalkyl or aralkyl; R 3 represents hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, phenyl, halogen, nitro or alkoxy, and x is 0 or 1, are reacted with formaldehyde or a formaldehyde-yielding compound in a molecular ratio of from 1À2 : 1 to 10 : 1 in the presence of acids in a closed reaction space at 50-500‹ C. and in the presence of carbon dioxide under superatmospheric pressure to give polyarylmethylene polyamines of formula or higher homologues thereof. If desired the reaction may be carried out in the presence of a C 1 -C 4 alcohol. |
