In order to provide the same range of vertical oscillation for a resiliently mounted seat, irrespective of the weight of the occupant, the loaded seat is adjusted, to bring its equilibrium position to the midpoint of a fixed range of oscillation, on actuation of a control mechanism by the occupant. An independent height adjustment is provided to vary the height of the seat relatively to the pin 58, which is movable with the seat, is located at the midpoint of slots 76 in base housing 50, the ends of the slots defining the fixed range of oscillation. The seat frame 10 is supported, on parallelogram linkage 46, by a known form of air spring (16, Figs. 1, 3 and 4, not shown), connectible to atmosphere and to a source of high pressure air by a two way air valve 48. A control member 54 consists of two elongated side plates (56) joined by pins 58, 60 and 82, the latter pivotally supporting a lever 80, 86 between the plates. A T-shaped member has a cross-sleeeve 68 embracing the pin 60 and its shaft 70 supported for axial sliding in sleeve 72 against the action of compression spring 74. Rod 112 rotates crank 128 partially or completely to withdraw pin 60, by means of link 130, from the teeth of rack 64 fixed to seat frame 10. When rod 112 is actuated by the seat occupant partially to withdrawn pin 60, member 54 is moved to the right against the action of spring 74, but the upper end 130 of lever 80, 86 cannot follow this movement since it abuts the end of sleeve 72. The end 90 is accordingly pivoted into contact with valve-operating rocker 92. If pin 58 is not at the mid-point of slots 76, rocker 92 is tilted out of the vertical to operate air valve 48 and cause the seat to rise or fall until end 90 lodges in notch 96 and pin 58 lies at the mid-point of the slots. On further actuation of rod 112 and of sleeve 136, the seat occupant can completely withdraw pin 60 and turn shaft 70 to raise or lower member 54 and thus valve 48 is operated to cause a follower motion of the seat, which is terminated when pin 60 is re-engaged with a selected tooth in rack 64, and pin 58 again reaches its mid-point. A known damping device 140 (Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 9, not shown) is automatically brought into play when oscillations reach an amplitude at which pin 58 is brought near the lower ends of slots 76.
