Paraffin hydrocarbon fractions obtained by a molecular sieve separation are purified to remove phenols, carbonyls, olefins, nitrogen, sulphur, colour bodies and aromatics by hydrogenation at a LHSV of 0.5-5 v./v./hr., 500-1000 p.s.i.g. with 200-2000 SCF/B of hydrogen over a Group VIII metal catalyst at 300-400 DEG F. or a Group VI metal catalyst which may be mixed with a Group VIII metal at 500-750 DEG F. Catalysts exemplified are supported nickel and cobalt molybdate. The feed may be in the C9-C20 range and may be distilled before or after the hydrogen treatment or before the molecular sieve separation. |
