A perforated record 10, Fig. 3, is sensed by a plurality of actuators 42 carried by a carriage 25 which is driven across the record, an actuator 42, when sensing a perforation, being released from carriage 25 and being retained by the perforation, and the actuators having associated means for providing electrical signals representing their positions. Actuators 42 may operate a matrix of diaphragm switches, each row of which is associated with a different value resistor, and the columns of which are scanned by a rotary switch to produce voltages representing the positions of the sensed perforations in each column. The carriage 25 is driven across the record 10 by a forked member 23, Fig. 1, attached to the same shaft 21 as a handle 20. A pin 28 on handle 20 engages a slot in a cam 30 so as to wind a spring motor driving the rotary readout switch. The cam 30 is latched by an interposer 34 which is released by momentary energization of a solenoid 60 to initiate readout. If the data is correctly transmitted, solenoid 60 is momentarily energized a second time during the return movement of cam 30 so that interposer 34 clears an intermediate step on cam 30 which would otherwise arrest cam 30 and handle 20 in an intermediate position, thus indicating incorrect transmission. |
