1,255,008. Apparatus for treating glass surfaces. PILKINGTON BROS. Ltd. J. LAWRENSON, and D. JONES. 2 April, 1969 [23 April, 1968], No. 19148/68. Heading C1M. Apparatus for effecting treatment of the surface of heated glass (e.g. a ribbon) 4 includes an elongated locating member 6 against which, in use, a body of molten material 5 (e.g. a metal or alloy) clings so that the body 5 also contacts the glass, the member 6 being supported from horizontal beam 10 by adjustable support members 14, there being provided adjustable .end-deflection means 20 co-operating with the end of locating member 6 for effecting vertical displacement of the end of the locating member 6 to maintain the member in a predetermined 'shape (e.g. linear) in operation. The glass 4 is preferably a continuous ribbon supported on a bath of molten metal 3, with the beam 10 and locating member 6 being arranged transverse to the direction of motion of the ribbon. Preferably the end deflection means comprise a wedge 21, which engages the locating member 6 or, as shown, a holder 13 therefor. As shown, the wedge is fixed by flanges 24, 25 on a rod 23, the end 26 of the rod having a screw thread engaged in a member 27 which is fixed relative to the locating member, either by fixing to the member 6 or to the beam 10. Thus rotation of the rod 23, preferably by mechanical linkages 30 extending outside the tank walls .loosens or tightens the wedge, and thus deflects the end of the locating member up or down. The,molten body 5 may be of Sn, Pb, Bi, Sb, In, Zn or Tl, or may be an alloy of Sn, Pb or Bi with Li, Na, K, Zn, Mg, Cu or Ag. Locating member 6 may be of a Pt-group metal, or a Cu, Ag, steel, Cu- Alloy, Ag-Alloy or refractory material coated with, e.g., Ru. The surface modification of the glass may be carried out by causing migration of ions from body 5 into the glass by passing an electric current or by controlling oxidizing conditions in the body 5. |
