[Also in Division H1 Novel compounds having a formula where M is at least one metal selected from ruthenium, iridium, rhodium, rhenium, osmium, indium, thallium, arsenic, hafnium, or zirconium and where x lies between 0À005 and 0À2 are claimed per se. They may be prepared by reaction of a vanadium oxide (V 2 O 3 , V 2 O 4 and/or V 2 O 5 ) with the metal M or its oxide under non- oxidizing conditions and preferably at 800- 1000‹ C. and at 20-65 kilobars pressure for a period of not more than 24 hours. Alternatively the metal vanadate, MVO 4 , may be reacted with the oxide, V 2 O 4 , preferably at 900- 1200‹ C. Either reaction may be carried out in an evacuated vessel, under an inert atmosphere, or in the presence of water. In the latter case a pressure of 2-3 kilobars and a temperature of 500-700‹ C. is preferred. |
