[Also in Divisions F2, G4 and H1] A flasher unit for vehicle direction-indicator lamps comprises an electromagnet with a pivoted ferromagnetic armature and a pneumatic delaying device, periodic displacement of the armature causing de-energization of the electromagnet pivoting of the armature and lighting of the lamps by a reduction in the overall resistance of the circuit. In the figure the electromagnet comprises a coil 1c wound on a hollow soft-iron core 1b, the latter being connected to the armature 2 by a bellows 1d. When the coil is energized, the armature is attracted, deforming the bellows from which air escapes through a valve 9. The armature pivots at 3, closing contact 4 and opening contact 5. The resistance of the coil normally reduces the current below the valve necessary to light the lamps Ud, Ug or to energize the relay 10 for the repeater T. The closing of contact 4 short circuits the coil and allows the lamps to light. The armature is then released by a spring 6, but the valve 9 is now closed and air can only enter the bellows slowly through a deformable washer 7 at the bottom of the hollow core 1b. Contact 4 opens immediately but contact 5 will not close until a yoke 5b tips over at the end of movement of the armature. The period of the cycle of operation can be adjusted by a screw 8 which alters the cross-section of the deformable washer 7. |
