Carboxylic acids are obtained by reacting an α-olefine having 2 to 30 carbon atoms with carbon monoxide and water in a liquid medium in the presence of a catalyst comprising a salt of tin or germanium together with a platinum salt. The reaction may be effected at 75-150‹C. under a pressure of 1000-5000 p.s.i. Suitable reaction media include ketones of up to 11 carbon atoms and alkyl ethers. A number of tin, germanium and platinum salts are specified, and examples are given of the manufacture of ntridecanoic and n-heptanoic acids from dodecene-1 and hexene-1, respectively. |
