1,272,852. Sulphonated alpha-olefins. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. 4 Nov., 1969 [4 Nov., 1968], No. 54013/69. Heading C2C. The colour characteristics of a sulphonated alpha-olefin reaction product, derived from one or more alpha.olefins having 10 to 26 carbon atoms, are improved by irradiating a solution of from 0À01-50 weight per cent of such a sulphonated alpha-olefin reaction product in a non-interfering solvent with electromagnetic radiation of wavelength from 2000 to 7000 Š from a source providing from 1 x 10<SP>-10</SP> to 1 x 10<SP>-5</SP> Einsteins/sec./cm.<SP>3</SP>, the irradiation being conducted in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The sulphonated alpha-olefin reaction product is an acid mix derived from sulphonation of an alpha-olefin C 10-26 or an alkali metal salt thereof. Suitable solvents are water, alkanols, alkyl ethers, aromatic ethers, cyclic ethers and glycol ethers. Suitable radiation sources are high pressure mercury arc lamps 50-10,000 watts or low-pressure mercury arc lamps 0À5-50 watts. The temperature may be from -40‹ to 100‹ C. and the duration 1 minute to 100 hours. |
