An irradiation device comprises a shielded chamber 10 closed on three sides with the entry/ exit means, e.g. cylinder 16, situated at the open side and operable so as to move containers into and out of the chamber. The radio-active source 34 is disposed in the vertical plane of symmetry of the chamber. Preferably, there are also means, e.g. roller chain conveyers 38, 42, for moving containers in closed circuit paths inside and outside the chamber. As shown, the conveyers consist of retractable catches 43 mounted on chains 42 which move backwards and forwards between the rollers 38. The cylinder 16 receives a container from the roller conveyer, then rotates through 180 degrees to deliver it to the chamber 10. The roller conveyer moves the container around the source 34 and back to the cylinder 16. The radiation source may consist of two (or a multiple thereof) panels of radio-active material, see Figs. 3-10, not shown. These panels are arranged to move in vertical but offset planes so that they are side by side in the source container (90) (below the irradiation chamber 10) but can be one higher than the other, or alternatively side by side or in an intermediate position relative to one another, when raised to their irradiation position. When more than two panels of radioactive material are used they may be arranged so that gaps between panels in the two vertical planes are not opposite one another, thus minimizing the influence of zones deprived of radio-active material. The source panels can be raised and lowered by chains or rods (98, 98a) which screw into one or both source panels. Preferably the total length of the source is less than that of the shielded chamber by at least twice the longitudinal direction of a container. The source container (90), see Figs. 2-4 (not shown), can be divided from the shielded chamber 10 by (a) a rotary cylinder (94) having a diametrical slot through which the source passes, or (6) two sliding inclined shutters. Electrical contacts can be provided at the ends of the paths of the source panels and at the end of the path followed by a hand crank controlling the rotary cylinder (94). These contacts prevent access to the chamber before the source panels are in their raised position and seal the source container (90) to the shielded chamber 10 when the panels are raised. The source container (90) is released only if source is in the container (90) and the source container shield (94) is closed. Radiation meters can be fitted in the walls and top of the shielded chamber 10, the latter being able to control access to the inside of the chamber. The total number and exposure time of the containers being irradiated can be controlled manually or automatically. |
