1,153,630. α,#-Ethylenically unsaturated compounds. TOYO RAYON K.K. 23 Dec., 1966 [24 Dec., 1965; 25 Dec., 1965; 29 March, 1966], No. 57667/66. Heading C2C. Compounds of the formula wherein X is a -CN or -COOR radical and R is a C 1-12 hydrocarbyl radical may be obtained by reacting a compound CH 2 = CH-X with an aldehyde R.CHO in the presence of a catalytic amount of a tertiary phosphine. Compounds of Formula I in which X represents a cyano group are claimed per se. When the radical R contains an aromatic ring, the nucleus may be substituted by halogen, nitro lower (C 1-5 ) alkyl, lower (C 1-5 ) alkoxy or lower (C 1-5 ) alkoxy carbonyl groups. The tertiary phosphine catalyst, which is generally used in an amount of 0À0001-0À1 moles per mole of the acrylic starting material, preferably contains at least one aliphatic radical attached to the phosphorus atom. The reaction may be effected at - 20-250‹ C., preferably in the presence of an inert organic solvent and preferably under a non-oxidizing atmosphere or under reduced pressure. A tertiary amine, suitably having a pKa of at least 5 at 25‹ C., may be added to the reaction mixture and a polymerization inhibitor may be present. |
