1,044,065. Metal melting furnaces. AMERICAN SMELTING & REFINING CO. June 21, 1963 [June 22, 1962], No. 2975/66. Divided out of 1,044,063. Heading F4B. A vertical melting furnace has charging apparatus at the top and an outlet for lapping molten metal at the bottom, and a number of burners 4 arranged in vertically spaced bands, the lowermost being near the furnace bottom. The furnace is tapered at the bottom and its floor slopes to a launder 3, the lower burner bank being located so that the tap hole 8 is kept clear of solidified metal. Scrap copper or copper cathodes are pushed into the furnace top so that they fall in a random manner, and the flames from the burners 4 are controlled in the manner discussed in the parent Specification so that copper with a low oxygen content is produced. |
