[Also in Division C2] A material which is a mixture of sterols useful in the treatment of glandular disorders is obtained from plants of genus Prurius species africana, latifolium, parviflorum, crassifolium, lusitamia and lausocerasus by extracting the powdered 'bark, wood, flowers or fruit with a liquid solvent for sterols, chromatographing the extract on silica, collecting the eluted sterol-containing fractions and removing therefrom at least the major proportion of #-sitosterol contained therein. This may be done by fractional crystallisation of the #-sitosterol successively from ethanol, acetone, and ethanol. The product may be incorporated into pharmaceutical compositions, e.g. in the form of capsules. |
