In an electrical connector, conductors are retained in mutual contact by a wedge having tapered serrated surfaces which mate with complementary serrations formed on the correspondingly tapered surfaces of a recess in an insulating block and/or one of the conductors. As shown, Fig. 5, exposed conductors on end portions of two tape cables A, B are held in mutual contact in an inwardly tapering recess, having serrated facing surfaces, in a body 6 of resilient insulating material, e.g. nylon, by a correspondingly serrated wedge 7 which may be of the same material. More than one such wedge may be used in conjunction with one recess (Fig. 8, not shown), and when two wires are to be held in contact the wedge may be notched to accommodate them. Figs. 9, 10, not shown, depict an insulating block (35) having a serrated recess (38) of frusto-conical shape which receives a complementary wedge (39) to retain in contact the bared ends of two cables (37) which are inserted into a bore (36) in the block (35) which intersects the recess (38). In a modification, Fig. 6, a plurality of generally H-shaped contact members 17, 23 are disposed in spaced slots along the length of a tapered recess 16 in a block 15, the contact members having serrated inner edges which engage exposed conductors on a tape cable 21. Each contact member comprises a terminal portion 18 which extends through an aperture in the base of block 15, being adapted for external connection, as by soldering, crimping, welding, wire-wrapping, or formed as a part of a two-part coupling. The tapered recess 16 may have smooth facing surfaces, of which the serrations on the contact members stand proud, and the contact members are retained in their slots by a limb 22 which passes through block 15 and is then deformed. Alternatively, each contact member may comprise a single serrated limb and integral terminal portion moulded into the block (Fig. 7, not shown); or the wedge member may be provided with the contacts. |
